2014 favorites | makeup part 3: eye makeup!

Of course eye makeup will have its own post... For me, it's the most fun part about makeup, even though I don't have the time to play around with it every day. Here's the list of eye makeup that I find myself using consistently!

nars smudge proof eyeshadow base » The best eyeshadow base I've used, hands down. The consistency and texture of this is so velvety and weightless. Even though it's whiteish it doesn't show up when blended out on the eyelids. Speaking of blending, it blends out really well - I used to use Urban Decay's primer and I found that it usually goes on patchy. The only thing I'd change about this is the applicator, it always grosses me out when I see my concealer or foundation has transferred on it.

mac paint pot in let's skate! » Such a pretty color - it's pinky, but shifts with gold shimmer. It doesn't crease on me, so it's nice as a base if I'm not using my NARS primer. It goes really well with purples, and anything that goes well with purples is a+ cause purple is my favorite color!

motives pressed eye shadows » Motives makes pretty darn great eyeshadows, and I'd even compare them with Urban Decay's shadows. These are my favorites: from left to right is Plum Frost, Vino, and Antique Pink. Plum Frost is just one of the prettiest purples I own, Vino is really nice for darkening the outer v, and I love Antique Pink for the inner corner highlight or base eyeshadow. I should add that Antique Pink is very similar to Urban Decay's Sin - but don't buy the single shade, because it's a shade that makes many appearances throughout Urban Decay palettes! While that was one of my favorites (I hit pan on it, too!) I don't reach for it as often anymore because Antique Pink sits conveniently in my MAC palette.

urban decay naked2 basics » I surprised myself by picking this up. This would have been one of the last things I would think about buying, because it's so, well, basic. But basic really shines through in this palette, because there's everything you need from highlight to transition shades to shades you could use as eyeliner. And it's all conveniently packaged in one little palette. This was in my November favorites, and I have a review here.

urban decay naked3 » When this first came out, I was reallyyyyy against buying it. Another Naked palette, and in pinky tones that might make me look sickly? No thanks. Then I saw this in-store, and immediately picked it up and I don't regret it a single bit. It translates more as jewel-toned on the eyes, which I find to be beautiful on the eyes. It has a good selection of mattes, velvets, glitters, and shimmers so it's nice to get different looks and textures out of this. Plus the darker shades aren't as pinky toned, so I feel like this is a pretty well-balanced palette.

too faced boudoir eyes palette » This is the palette I usually take with me when I go traveling. The matte shades are a little bit chalky and some of the other shades kick up powder if you're not gentle with your brush, but I made this work because I looove these shades. Satin Sheets, Sugar Walls, Lap Dance, and Voulez-Vous are my favorite shadows in this palette. Satin Sheets is also very similar to MAC's Let's Skate!, though one is a powder and one is a cream. I also love how Too Faced named these shadows. I'm not sure if James was amused or embarrassed when I showed him.

motives gel liner in little black dress » After using felt tipped liners for a while and switching back to gel liner, I find that gel liner is a lot easier for me to apply. This smudges the least on me out of all the eyeliners I've tried. The sad thing is I only have one angled brush, so it's either the gel liner or nice eyebrows. Can't have both sadly.

motives for lala kohl eyeliner in black » Almost everyone raves about Urban Decay's 24/7 pencil liners, but for me I find that it's a little too creamy and smudges/transfers very easily (though I do love the color selection they have to offer!). Other liners seem to be too hard and I have to tug pretty harsly on my eye to get the color on. This one is somewhere in the middle, just the right consistency (hardness? texture?) to use for lining and smudging out my outer lower lashline.

And finally - this rounds up my makeup favorites for this year. I'll be taking a short break from 2014's favorites, so the next and final yearly favorites post will show up sometime in January. You're probably all sick of seeing so many beauty products in a short span of time, anyway ;)

  1. wowzah, let's skate looks nice! How have I never heard of it before??? Also, this reminded me I have an unloved Naked 3 palette stashed away somewhere! I really need to pull it out some more, but for some reason I keep forgetting about it.

  2. Hmm I haven't got into eyeshadow yet because I feel like it makes my eyes look smaller, but between the Naked Basics and Naked Basics 2, which would you recommend? I would like it for the purpose of extremely natural eye shadow looks. xx

  7. It doesn't show that well in photos, but Let's Skate! has gold shimmers in it as well :) I think with so many neutral palettes out there, it's easy to forget about a few!

  8. It's just placement/colors with eye makeup :) There's plenty of tutorials/tips out there for making the eyes look bigger on Youtube! Personally I keep the darker colors on the outer part of the eye and the lighter colors nearer to the middle of the face if that makes any sense?? I haven't tried the first Naked Basics palette and for some reason I'm not interested in that one, so I'm sorry I can't be much help for comparisons!
