metropolitan museum of art | egyptian exhibit

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK

I had to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for an assignment for one of my art history classes. We had a few exhibits to choose from and I picked the Egyptian one. I don't know what it is about ancient Egyptian art, but I love everything about it and it's my favorite part of ancient western art.

These were my favorites.

I picked this piece for my assignment and took a ton of photos cause there's no way I'm gonna stand there and draw this thing from different angles. Some guy came up to me while I was taking photos of it and we started talking and walking around. I could tell he was somewhat into me (bumped shoulders, put his hand at the small of my back for brief moments) but at the same time I wasn't sure if that was the way he just acted and I DON'T KNOW WHEN THE RIGHT TIME IS TO TELL SOMEONE I HAVE A BOYFRIEND. Relatable video here. We ended up exchanging numbers and the next day he asks how my day was and I said I went shopping. Then he said "buy anything sexy?" and I flipped my shit saying that it's totally inappropriate and uncomfortable for me since we only met the day before. So proud of me for standing up for myself, because usually I wouldn't reply and I'd ignore them forever.

A lot of their pieces are so tiny. We went over cylinder seals (second picture) in class, and I always thought they were at least the size of a water bottle - nope! They're even smaller than from knuckle to knuckle on my fingers.

It's really interesting to me that they covered this statue in another stone, but a lot of the parts got worn away.

Some other miscellaneous things. I fell on my back kind of recently and it hurt to carry my camera, so I didn't go to see any other exhibits. Which is kind of a good thing, because that means I can go back another day. Honestly I'd say you would probably need two days to fully explore the museum. I was only in the Egyptian exhibit and that took a good 2 or 3 hours!

  1. All that stuff is so cool! I've always been interested in Egyptian things, I loved learning about it when I was in school. I really need to start going to more museums! And I can't believe that guy said that to you!! How creepy I'm so glad you told him off haha!

  5. It's categorized as western art cause it's at the western side of the continent - kind of weird to me!

  6. I also love looking at Egyptian art - it's always one of my favourite areas at museums.

And ugggggh that guy. It's so awkward because it's not actually that easy to bring up that you have a partner. I usually just fake a text from my s/o or something ... Or, "Have you seen this movie? Yeah it was great. I just saw it this weekend with my BOYFRIEND." But still. It shouldn't be that hard.

  7. UHHHHHHMMMMM STRANGER DANGER. I am seriously jealous that you're in NYC though--SO MANY MUSEUMS! One of my minors in uni was in Classics, so I've been to a few Ancient Greek/Roman/Egpytian exhibits here in Toronto + when I was in London, and it's always fascinating to see art and such.
